Kinesio Taping
You may have noticed the coloured tape on some of the athletes at the Commonwealth Games or at the Wellington Sevens Rugby. This taping method was developed 30 years ago by Kenzo Kase in Japan but has only fairly recently arrived in New Zealand.
It aims to mimic the qualities of the skin by it's thickness and ability to stretch. By specific application the tape can be used to switch on/off muscles, reduce swelling, support a joint, reduce scar tissue and relieve pain.
The tape comes in 4 colours of pink, blue, black or beige but they all have the same qualities. The combination of the tape being hypo-allergenic, quick dry and it's elastic qualities lasting for 3-5 days it can remain in place and continue to work for up to 5 days.
To use Kinesio taping effectively, specific training and correct application is required. It is a great option to assist/enhance our patient's treatment at Focus Health.
