Take a break from gravity with hydrotherapy
Looking to build back up after surgery or setback?
We recommend you talk to Susan Swart. Susan takes our hydrotherapy classes at Onekawa pool on Tuesdays and Thursdays. While these classes are mainly used by Focus Health patients after hip, knee or shoulder surgery, the pool is suitable for anyone looking for low-impact resistance training.
How hydrotherapy can help you
Hydrotherapy is a great general conditioning workout if strength or flexibility is an issue.
In a zero gravity environment, patients can work on a range of exercises that they would otherwise find difficult or impossible to do. It's a great way to build back up to unsupported land-based movement. Water provides support, but also resistance. "And the faster you go, the more resistance you get" Susan says.
Hydrotherapy with a health professional
Susan graduated from the University of Pretoria in 2002 with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy. She also holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Sports Injury from Wits University, Johannesburg.
After over a decade of professional experience in South Africa - and a two year stint at a large general hospital in the UK - Susan and her husband Morkel (also a physiotherapist) decided to make a better life for their family in New Zealand.
Part of our community and part of our team
Susan had been living in Hawke’s Bay for three years, before joining the Focus Health team in the summer of 2021. Susan believes understanding a patient’s cultural and personal perspective is an important part of the treatment plan. She has a special interest in treatment post concussion. Outside of work, Susan runs and swims to keep fit, and coaches mini basketball for nine-and-under at her children’s school.
Susan works from our Onekawa Clinic in Napier, Monday to Friday 9am to 2.30 pm.
